Founder's Note: Cape Town's Coastal Elegance, Winelands, and Safari
Every hotel room, every dish, every safari track — personally vetted at the southernmost tip of Africa.
When we founded Throne Voyages, we established an unyielding promise: we will never recommend a destination, hotel, or experience that we have not personally tested, refined, and fallen in love with ourselves.
Recently, I traveled to the southernmost tip of the African continent — where the wild Atlantic meets the warm Indian Ocean — to Cape Town. I undertook this journey not as a mere tourist, but as a discerning traveler testing every logistical detail, dining table, and private safari reserve to ensure it meets the uncompromising standards of our Throne Voyages clientele. I am delighted to share this personal founder's journal, capturing a seamless journey that spans from the shadow of Table Mountain to the rolling hills of Stellenbosch and the heart of the wild bushveld.
At the Heart of Victoria & Alfred Waterfront: Table Bay Hotel
Upon arriving in Cape Town, my residence of choice was the iconic Table Bay Hotel, perfectly situated at the prestigious Victoria & Alfred Waterfront. The moment you step into the grand lounge, you are embraced by a regal blend of classic British elegance and warm African hospitality. Watching Table Mountain emerge through the morning mist from the window of my suite while enjoying fresh local oysters was an extraordinary beginning. Logistically, its prime, secure location provides seamless access to the city's finest private yacht charters and dining.
Coastal Gastronomy: The Bungalow, Baia, and Zanzero
Cape Town's culinary scene rivals the world's most celebrated capitals. During my testing of the city's top dining sanctuaries, three establishments stood out exceptionally.
The Bungalow (Camps Bay)
Perched directly above the granite boulders of Clifton and Camps Bay, this is undoubtedly one of the most elite sunset locations on the planet. Sipping a chilled local Cap Classique while watching the Atlantic waves crash beneath the amber sky was a defining moment of the trip.
Baia Restaurant
Located at the V&A Waterfront, Baia is a true temple for seafood connoisseurs. The freshly caught Mozambique langoustines, line fish, and local oysters are served with flawless white-glove service.
Zanzero
A chic, highly sophisticated venue combining refined Italian culinary techniques with Cape Town's vibrant cosmopolitan energy — perfect for an intimate evening dinner.
A Feast for the Senses: GOLD Restaurant
To immerse myself in the authentic cultural heart of the continent, I spent an evening at GOLD Restaurant. This is far more than a meal; it is a 14-course sensory theater celebrating culinary traditions from across 14 African nations, accompanied by live djembe drumming performances and traditional face-painting rituals. I immediately marked this as an essential cultural stop for our guests.
Journey to the Edge of the Continent: Simon's Town, Cape of Good Hope & Cape Point
The following day, accompanied by our private chauffeur, we followed the winding coastal roads southward along the dramatic Cape Peninsula.
Our first stop was Simon's Town (Boulders Beach), a charming enclave where you can walk alongside wild African penguins in their natural habitat. We then pressed on to the legendary Cape of Good Hope and Cape Point — historical monuments to maritime exploration. Standing by the lighthouse where two ocean currents converge, looking out into the endless blue, is a humbling, breathtaking experience.
Two oceans, one horizon — and a silence that recalibrates the traveler.
Winelands Aristocracy: Stellenbosch (Rupert & Rothschild + Tokara)
The most refined chapter of my journey took place in the rolling emerald valleys of Stellenbosch. Here, I conducted private tastings at two world-famous estates.
Rupert & Rothschild Vignerons
A prestigious partnership between the French winemaking aristocracy (the Rothschild family) and one of South Africa's most prominent dynasties (the Rupert family). The private cellar tasting of their Classique and Baroness Edmond series highlighted the magnificent terroir of the region.
Tokara Wine Estate
Perched on the crest of the Helshoogte Pass, Tokara is a vision of modern luxury. Combining award-winning wines, olive oil tastings, a world-class contemporary art collection, and a clifftop restaurant overlooking the valley, it offers an incredible VIP experience for our guests.
Face-to-Face with the Wild: Aquila Private Game Reserve Safari
No journey to South Africa is complete without experiencing the raw power of the “Big Five” (Lion, Elephant, Leopard, Rhino, Buffalo). A short, comfortable drive from the city brought me to Aquila Private Game Reserve. Navigating the reserve in an open-top 4x4 with expert rangers, watching lions roam and elephants gather at waterholes, delivered an exhilarating safari experience paired with luxury lodge comfort.
